Looking to the future!
When considering future career options and identifying potential growth areas from a jobs perspective, students and their parents/guardians are encouraged to look at available data, such as the Labour Market Information Portal. It is an excellent resource for students and parents/guardians and brings together data from a range of official sources to enhance our understanding of the local labour market.
As we navigate a workforce post COVID, updated data has projected the following:
- Employment is projected to increase in 17 of the 19 broad industries over the five years to November 2025.
- Health Care and Social Assistance is projected to make the largest contribution to employment growth over the period (increasing by 249,500), followed by Accommodation and Food Services (139,900), Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (131,100), and Education and Training (118,600).
Together, these four industries are projected to generate over three-fifths, or 64.4 per cent, of total employment growth over the five years to November 2025. Importantly, declines are projected in Manufacturing and in Information Media and Telecommunications.
This data is useful as a tool to support informed career decision making, but the labour market can change quickly! It is not advisable to base employment and training decisions solely on this type of information. Students should be encouraged to consider their strengths, interests and values to identify careers of interest.
