It’s been a busy and exciting two weeks as we welcomed everyone after the midyear break!

Student Achievement

Congratulations to Senior School students who received Certificates of Academic Achievement for Semester 1.  We were able to take this one step further with the first presentation of Colours during our Awards Assembly in Week 1.

The Colours system encourages students to participate in the vast range of school programs on offer.  Colours are recognition of ongoing contribution and commitment to these programs in the following areas:

  • Academic Colours
  • Culture Colours
  • House Colours
  • Performing Arts Colours
  • Service Colours
  • Sport Colours
  • Principal’s Colours

Colours and Half Colours will be represented on student’s blazer pocket with a small, embroidered symbol.

Women of Note Breakfast

Year 11 students Charlize, Noku and Holly attended the ‘Women of Note’ Casey Mentor Breakfast last Friday.

Here they had the opportunity to meet women with experience in industries relevant to their own career aspirations.

Our students took away three main points from the keynote speaker’s address to assist in their career progression:

  • The importance of having smart goals
  • Reaching out to supportive family and friends
  • Surrounding yourself with like-minded people.

Our students spent the morning with mentors whose careers align with their own interests – Charlize in Sports Development and Fitness, Noku in Software Development and Architecture, and Holly in Science/IT/Engineering.

The mentors provided reassurance by explaining that, when their original pathway was not the right fit, they were able to successfully transfer from one industry to another.

Snow Camp

In the third week of the holidays, a group of Year 11 and 12 students embarked on a long journey to Falls Creek for their much-awaited Snow Camp.

Most of the group were first timers and spent a couple of lessons on a small hill practising using heels and toes to control their snowboard. It was challenging, but despite the pain from the constant falling and strenuous work, only somewhat relieved by our evening yoga sessions, everyone made excellent progress.

Within a matter of days, many students were able to progress from beginner to intermediate runs, becoming increasingly adventurous in their moves and turns, ultimately carving up the slopes in style!

Year 11 student, Mason, shares his experience below: “My biggest take away from this trip wasn’t the snowboarding skills I picked up, but it was the relationships I formed over the week, the fun times we shared, and the resilience and perseverance that was shown from every person on the trip.”

Cross Country Carnival

On Tuesday, selected students in the Casey Grammar Cross Country team headed to Baxter Park for the SIS Cross Country Carnival.

The weather was not on our side, with very muddy and wet conditions proving difficult for our athletes.

We placed 2nd overall out of seven schools and were overall winners of the Junior (Yr 7 & 8) shield!

We also won the Under 14 Girls Pennant, the Under 14 Boys Pennant, the Under 15 Girls Pennant and the Under 17 Boys age Pennant.

All students performed at their absolute best and I am so proud of the way they represented Casey Grammar School.

A big thank you to Ms Kylie Reeves, Mr Steven Little & Melissa Woolf for helping with team management and support of students on the day. It was a truly great day out with the students!

Titration Competition

In early June, 19 eager VCE students participated in the 2022 Victorian Titration Competition.

They performed two sets of acid-base titrations to determine the concentrations of supplied solutions of sodium hydroxide and ethanoic acid. In doing so, they also built upon their skills in team work and stoichiometry. It was a timed competition and the students did extremely well to complete it all in the two hour time frame.

Our teams will be ranked on the accuracy and precision of their concentrations of the ethanoic acid solutions and we should know our results by early October. Thanks must go to Mr Meehan for organising all of the necessary glassware and additional material and to Mrs Standish and Mr Selfridge for supporting the students during the competition.

Best wishes for the upcoming results!

‘Why Wellbeing’ Incursion

Wellbeing themed incursions offer a chance for students to break the routine of school, to check-in on their progress, and think about how they are really getting along and feeling.

We now offer a series of wellbeing incursions across the year to all students in the secondary school. We are also investigating offerings we may make into the Junior School in the future.

Most recently, our Year 10 and 11 students completed another workshop with Tomorrow Man / Woman.

Our Year 10 boys have just completed the second workshop ‘The HIS-story of Man’.

While the girls have done ‘Her-story’.

Our Year 11 students have just completed their third workshop, after doing one in Year 10 last year. They completed ‘The Man and the Mask’ or [LP1] ‘Her Influence’.

The Year 10 boys and their families were given the opportunity to contribute to a Monash University study investigating the positive impact of the first Tomorrow Man workshop they completed earlier this year, ‘Breaking the Man Code.’

The opportunity to contribute to academic research is in itself a positive, but to also affirm the importance of programs like these, and to potentially open these up to other young people, is an excellent opportunity.

Late in Term 2 our Year 9 students participated in full day programs called ‘Thrive with Flourish Girl and Man Cave’

In Man Cave our Year 9 boys covered the following topics:

In Flourish Girl our Year 9 girls covered the following topics:

We look forward to continuing to provide the students with world-class opportunities for them to reflect and develop their own identity and sense of wellbeing.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

Under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) and the Disability Standards for Education 2005 (the Standards), Australian students with disability must be able to access and participate in education on the same basis as their peers.

To ensure this, students with a disability may receive support in the classroom or other areas of schooling by way of adjustments to access education. Support given to students to access the curriculum is based on the professional judgement of teachers, professionals and in consultation with family members.

The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) provides information about the number of students with disability in schools and the adjustments they receive. The Australian Education Regulation 2013 requires all schools in Australia to report the data collected for the NCCD to the Australian Government on an annual basis.

The NCCD is a consistent, reliable and systematic way in recording the number of students with disabilities who are receiving adjustments and enables schools and education authorities to better understand the needs of students in how they can be best supported at school.
