Exciting Year of Career Exploration

Welcome back! I trust that you and your families have had an enjoyable break.

From a career education perspective, we have an exciting year planned. I am committed to providing CGS students with the opportunity to engage with a variety of career education opportunities, including guest speakers, mock interviews, industry visits and University/TAFE campus tours.

As we start a New Year, I also want to acknowledge the wonderful achievements of our 2020 Year 12 cohort. In what was a very challenging year, amazing outcomes were attained. Success looks different for everybody and I have been proud of our student’s achievements. I have enjoyed supporting them with their transitions to their respective career pathways, whether that be an apprenticeship, TAFE or university.

Class of 2020 Shines with a Range of Course Offers

All of our students who applied to VTAC received course offers in the first round released on 14 January. From Biomedicine to Media Communication, it was wonderful to see the diversity of courses that our students pursued.

Over the next month, I will share some of our 2020 Year 12 student destinations, starting with Param Mehta.

Param Mehta

Param Constructs a Solid Career Path

Param Mehta – 2021 destination

Name: Param Mehta

Subjects completed (VCE):

English, Product Design Technology (PDT), Chemistry, Maths Methods, Further Maths and Business Management

2021 destination:

Bachelor of Architecture/Bachelor of Construction Management – Deakin University

What made you choose this course?

I have always had an interest in designing and the building industry, therefore choosing PDT as one of my subjects. Choosing this specific course allows me to do both technical and creative based studies, which I enjoy.

Career goal: To have my own construction company in the future.

What are you most excited about as you make the transition from CGS to further study?

The thing I am most excited about is transitioning to becoming more independent in both education and life; just having that sense of independence and freedom of doing anything you like. I am also looking forward to working and collaborating with colleagues and working in general.

Any final ‘words of wisdom’ for the Senior School community?

Have fun! Don’t be too hard on yourself as opportunities do arise and make sure to take them when they do. Also, always aim for higher than what you think you will get; most time you do achieve higher than you thought you would.

Congratulations Param and all the best!

Year 12 2020 career counselling appointments

Over the next few weeks, I will be meeting with all Year 12 students for a one on one 15-minute appointment. The purpose of these discussions will be for me to gain an understanding of the career pathways that they have identified for 2021 and beyond. This information will inform my work for the remainder of 2021 and will similarly allow me to target any information sessions/guest speakers to meet the needs of the student cohort.

Again, I am excited to support your child with this next stage in their lives. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Seeking volunteers

Mock Interview Year 10 students & Guest Speakers

I am seeking parent/guardian volunteers to support a number of career education activities that will be run in 2021. More specifically:

  • Year 10 Mock Interviews (Week 9 – Term 1)
  • VCE meeting/s (guest speaker/information sessions) (Term 2 & 3)

Whether you are a Nurse, Tradesperson, Doctor, Community Engagement Officer, Graphic Designer, Retail Manager, Administration Officer, Accountant or work in IT: I believe that our students would greatly benefit from the opportunity to be interviewed by professional and/or hear first-hand about your job and the pathway/s you specifically undertook in order to successfully transition into this profession.

If you are interested in supporting these initiatives, I would encourage you to email me directly at s.blythman@caseygrammar.vic.edu.au. A current Working with Children Check will be required.
