Important Information for Year 12 Students

A reminder to Year 12 students that VTAC applications are now open. Timely applications are due on 30 September 2020. I would encourage all Year 12 students who are interested in tertiary study in 2021 to submit applications sooner rather than later. One of our more proactive Year 12 students has already received a conditional offer to study at University in 2021. A terrific outcome! I am continuing to hold one-on-one meetings (via Google Meet) to support all Year 12 students. To book in an appointment, please visit:

CCF Civil Skills Cadetship Program

Hallam Secondary College in partnership with the Civil Contractors Federation is offering a Civil Skills Cadetship Program. Supported by the Victorian Government, this practical program leads directly to jobs in the civil construction industry.

Successful applicants will learn skills to support them with transitioning to civil and infrastructure projects in Melbourne’s South East region, including:

  • Cranbourne Line upgrade
  • Monash Freeway upgrade
  • New Hallam station
  • South Road upgrade
  • Level Crossings Removal
  • Education and training (focus on post-school education)
  • Experience (employers want their staff to have experience – young people should consider volunteer work, extra-curricular activities as a strategy for developing skills)
  • Employability Skills (employers want the right match for their businesses)

Application close on 6 September 2020. An information session will be held on 7 September 2020.

The Impact of the Pandemic on the Victorian Labour Market and its Implications for Young People (webinar)

Labour market analyst Ivan Neville (Department of Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business) delivered a webinar, which provided a unique view of the labour market situation facing young people. As the job market becomes more competitive (due to COVID-19), it is increasingly important that young people are aware of what employers are looking for, namely:

Statistics have shown that a qualification significantly improves job prospects, with unemployment rates for people aged between 25 – 34 years at 30.7% when they have not completed Year 12/have a Certificate I or II qualifications.

By comparison, the unemployment rate for individuals with a Bachelor's degree (or higher) is 4.9%. VET (TAFE) is also an excellent option with 76.6% of graduates finding employment within 6 months of graduation (median starting salary of $59,100).

In short, the best place for our children to be during a global pandemic is studying (i.e. actively developing their skills and knowledge).

He also predicted ‘where the jobs will be’ after the COVID-19 pandemic. More specifically, he suggested:

  • Health, aged and disability care will be the largest employing industry across the country
  • Retail and hospitality are dynamic industries and will continue to provide many jobs
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services, Construction, Education and Training and Manufacturing will continue to be large employing industries.

For more information, I have attached a copy of the Webinar slides. I would encourage all students and their parents/guardians to have a look at this presentation, to inform career planning.
